ALERT – File permission and ownership issues affecting this upload.
I’ve been waiting and hoping for Aftermath, ever since Epic blackmailed me into accepting THEIR changes T&C, after I had bought the game. Steam tried the same stunt 12 years ago, and I refuse to have my purchases held to ransom by an unwanted 3rd party DRM policeman. So, despite owning the game, Epic won’t let me update it. Skidrowcodex was my last hope… Hooray! here at last. Thanks Skidrowcodex…
However, the presently uploaded version of Aftermath is a little different. The game doesn’t need a crack, and is uploaded as a standalone “just run this” installation folder and game .exe.
There is no actual installation program to run.
Which is fine, except running the game results in all manner of File Permissions problems, particularly for the save games.
In fact, the save games cannot be seen by the game upon next starting. Yet there they are, visible in the Savegames folder.
They were visible during the previous game session – so, “going back” to try to handle something differently is quite possible. Except, if you close the game and restart, then those previous save games vanish, despite being shown in the right folder.
It turns out that all of this game, and the …\Documents\Paradox Interactive folder (and all subfolders) gets hijacked by “OWNER RIGHTS” and defeats all attempts to take ownership, or assign permissions. Even all of the online fixes to resolve the endless “Access denied” errors, including command line actions, are defeated by whatever has been done to the ownership permissions.
It FEELS like what happens with ransomware, but might be something as simple as the uploader zipping up the game folder with Bitlocker on (for example). By unzipping it, I get “permission” to read and use the files from Windows, but I’m not allowed to do anything to it (like delete it, or touch any of the things the game PROPAGATED like the save games, and settings.ini) without the original Bitlocker digital certificate.
In other words, I recommend you do NOT run this game as it stands.
I’m not sure if the problem is an oversight, or an actual test of ransomware access, but once the game starts creating files and savegames, you will not have permission to delete them or edit them or be in control of “File ownership”.
UPDATE:
For what it is worth, it seems possible to “fix” the file ownership/permission issues.
Firstly, un-rar the download somewhere other than the C: drive.
Then run “Take Ownership” of the unzipped contents, and all subfolders. (google for it – it’s quite a common thing) This should give user ownership of the files before any are created by the game itself.
When you run the game, a folder is created under C:\Users\[you]\Documents\Paradox Interactive\Surviving the Aftermath. Like, Savegames.
If the game is run before “Take Ownership”, then any savegames created belong to the game, and not you. And that causes nasty problems when you want to load a savegame later.
Nasty problems as in invisible files, Enumeration failures, Access Denied failures, and more. You can see the files, but the next time you run the game, they cannot be found, and any attempt to move or delete them simply fails.
I turned off Windows 10 “Tamper Protection” in order to Take Ownership of the Paradox Interactive folder (and all subfolders). I run the game from a different drive (G:\) where Windows is not quite so picky about protecting things, and Take Ownership had no problems running there successfully. Once the C:\ user permissions are sorted, turn the tamper protection back on.
With EVERYTHING changed to my user ownership, the game now runs, sees the savegames, and any new savegames created are now owned by me, and can be seen and handled as per usual by windows.
I’m guessing that running the game without taking ownership first, results in the savegames “belonging” to an unknown user, and despite everything seeming “right” (I had full user control) I was not allowed to access the savegames reading (loading) the next time the game started. Very frustrating when all internet solutions to that issue implied Take Ownership should have worked without problems. Tamper Protection was a pure guess, since it involved a “sensitive” User area on C: drive.
It’s nasty and risky stuff, and not the usual level of Skidrowcodex quality fare, but this seemed to work for me.
